Kickoff to Men's Health

Prostate cancer is diagnosed every 2½ minutes in the U.S., but early detection and treatment of this disease significantly increase a man’s chance of survival. Arkansas Urology, the largest urology practice in the state, once again engaged Mangan Holcomb Partners to help raise awareness about this important health issue. The 2009 Kickoff to Men’s Health was the fifth annual screening event coordinated by the agency, providing Arkansas Urology the opportunity to commemorate National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month (September) in central Arkansas while highlighting the clinic’s doctors and service lines.

Promotion of the Kickoff to Men’s Health event targeted central Arkansas men, using a combination of advertising and PR/promotional strategies. Mangan Holcomb also negotiated and managed a men’s health promotion on the state’s No. 1 TV station, ABC affiliate KATV, that included news segments, morning show interviews, public service announcements and a live, call-in show.

While the previous four Kickoff events were full-scale, family-friendly health fairs, the 2009 Kickoff was scaled back to a screening event due to construction on the Arkansas Urology campus. Nevertheless, 189 men had free prostate screenings – an increase over 2008. Of those, 13 were found to have elevated PSA test results and/or abnormal DREs, and 69 others tested positive for BPH (enlarged prostate that causes painful and annoying symptoms).
