Each May, the Department of Arkansas Heritage (DAH) sponsors Arkansas Heritage Month to celebrate the state’s history and culture. Arkansas communities embrace Heritage Month by planning festivals and events specific to their area. At a time when Americans and Arkansans are focused on natural conservation and preservation, Heritage Month 2009 focused on preserving and protecting our state’s natural heritage. Only In Arkansas: Exploring Our Natural Heritage recognizes the work of the Arkansas Natural Heritage Commission, one of the Department of Arkansas Heritage’s seven agencies. Mangan Holcomb was responsible for developing and implementing public relations strategies to publicize Heritage Month statewide.
The agency worked with DAH to plan and promote a Heritage Month kickoff event, held at the River Market in downtown Little Rock. During the event, Gov. Mike Beebe unveiled the 2009 commemorative poster – designed by Mangan Holcomb’s own Mike Newton – featuring original artwork of species endemic to Arkansas. Smaller versions of the collectible poster were available as magnets, which served as party favors. In addition, guests enjoyed the debut of DAH’s new communications campaign, “Your Heritage Is Here,” which included TV spots and a revamped educational booth. In support of Heritage Month, Mangan Holcomb also negotiated and managed a promotion on the state’s top-rated TV station, ABC affiliate KATV, that featured The Spirit of Arkansas Road Trip. KATV reporter Jessica Dean visited 25 communities in five weeks, exploring the state’s heritage at each location. As part of the promotion, the agency negotiated opportunities for each of DAH’s seven agencies to appear on Good Morning Arkansas to highlight upcoming events, exhibits and other programs.
